Oral History Workshop, November 2015

We are pleased to announce that the Belize History Association (BHA) is organizing an Oral History Workshop to be held in November 2015. The purpose of the workshop is to equip BHA members with essential knowledge and skills of oral history. It shall focus on building the capacity of the BHA to produce biographies which can be published in our newsletters and website.

Schedule
The workshop will be held on four consecutive Saturdays from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm on the Nov 14, 2015; Nov 21, 2015; Nov 28, 2015 and Dec 05. Belmopan, Cayo.

Objectives
After completing this workshop, participants are expected to be able to:

  • Apply essential techniques of oral history
  • Explore the strategies of research validity and ethics
  • Improve skills for writing biographies
  • Appreciate the value of oral history to Belize

Facilitator
The workshop facilitator will be historian Dr. Joseph-Aondofe Iyo.

Certificate
In order to receive a Certificate of Completion, participants must attend all four sessions of the workshop.

Registration
The workshop is only open to Registered BHA members. To increase the reach of the BHA, we are seeking 3 participants from Northern Belize, 2 from Belize District, 2 from Cayo, and 3 from Southern Belize. Please send an email requesting participation to <[email protected]>, include your name and location. Only members who desire to participate in all four sessions are encouraged to apply.   Registration is Free for Registered Members!

Deadline
Interested members are asked to notify us of their interest to participate by Wednesday, October 28, 2015. Approved applicants will be notified by October 30, 2015.

Youth Perspectives on the Belize-Guatemala Dispute and the ICJ @ The George Price Center, Belmopan

Background

The Belize History Association (BHA) in collaboration with the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) and other partners will host its Fourth Annual September Lecture as part of the 2017 September Celebrations.

The lecture is entitled “Youth Perspectives on the Belize-Guatemala Dispute and the ICJ”. It will feature presentations by tertiary level students. They will discuss the pros and cons of submitting the Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute to the International Court of Justice and the importance of youths in this regard.

The lecture will take place at The George Price Center, in the City of Belmopan on Friday September 29, 2017 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This will also be broadcasted live on Lovefm and The National Channel T.V. and Facebook Live.

Participants

Four youths from three tertiary institutions will participate in the lecture. This includes Chelsea Kuylen from Ecumenical Junior College, Markisha Jorgensen from Independence Junior College, and Joshua Pott and Kendice Armstrong from St. John’s College Junior College.

Each person who shares and comment on the post will then be entered into the raffle. The winner will be drawn from the raffle box at the end of the lecture. There is a limit of only one entry ticket for each online participant.

Belize National Research Conference @ Jaguar Auditorium

The National Institute of Culture and History, University of Belize, Galen University, and The University of the West Indies is organizing the 1st Belize National Research Conference to be held on March 21 and 22, 2018 at the University of Belize, Jaguar Auditorium, Belmopan.

The Conference theme is: Research and Development in Belize. Belizean and international researchers, professors and graduate students will be presenting papers in fields such as anthropology, history, linguistics, science, education and the environment.

The Conference will start with an opening ceremony on March 21, 2018 at 9:00am. Throughout the two days conference, 28 panel and 7 poster presentations will be featured.

We are inviting you to come listen, dialogue and participate in this conference. There will be a small fee of $10.00 per day which will also give you access to snacks during the break.
